Public Engagement & Equity Update May Part 1

Governor office updates May 16 part 1
Governor Tim Walz has proclaimed May as American Indian Month to recognize American Indian cultures, contributions, history, traditions, art, and land. During the month of May, we celebrate the rich culture and diversity among the 7 Ojibwe and 4 Dakota sovereign tribal nations who share land with the State of Minnesota. This weekend, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are kicking off the 2022 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener on Tribal land at Leech Lake Indian Reservation. We recognize the many contributions made by Tribal Nations, the urban Native community, and numerous Native organizations to strengthen and empower the Native community.
Governor Walz Signs Bills into Law
Governor Tim Walz has signed a bill providing $300 million to address the state’s opioid crisis into law. The legislation ensures that Minnesota’s share of a multi-state settlement will be used efficiently and effectively by communities across the state in areas like education, treatment, prevention, and recovery strategies.
Additionally, the Governor has signed into law a comprehensive veterans bill that will move the state toward ending and preventing veteran homelessness, provide service bonuses to veterans and Gold Star families, and fund veterans homes and veterans cemeteries. The bill also includes funding for enlistment incentives for Service Members in the Minnesota National Guard. As we are nearing the end of the 2022 legislative session, continue to find updated news on the Office of Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan website.
